A traditional university places strong emphasis on theory and research, while a Fachhochschule, or university of applied sciences, focuses more on professional applications. The latter more often includes substantial placements and projects with businesses. Both types of institution award bachelor’s and master’s degrees at equivalent qualification levels. The choice is therefore mainly about the approach to learning and the character of the programme.
