Grandes écoles are selective higher education institutions, often focused on particular areas such as engineering, business or political science. Universities generally offer a broader range of subjects and follow the licence, master and doctorat system. Grandes écoles can be public or private, and admissions and fees vary by programme. Not all require French preparatory classes: there are also pathways after secondary school or previous higher education.
